Old Windsor F.C are through to the Last 16 in the Berks & Bucks F.A. Charles Twelftree Trophy this season after eliminating current holders Burghfield on Saturday.
Burghfield beat The Os en route to winning the county cup competition last season, and so the East Berkshire League Premier Division champions had the chance for revenge in the third round tie at the Old Windsor Recreation Ground.
Joseph Allen was the top goals scorer in the Premier Division last year and his strike inside the opening 15 minutes gave the home side a narrow lead heading into the half-time interval.
Burghfield are one of the best teams in local Saturday adult grassroots football and no doubt were keen to keep a hold on the silverware. The Thames Valley Premier League side turned the tie on hits head when Oliver Brown scored twice in eight minutes to put his team ahead with 30 minutes still to play.
Old Windsor are undefeated in all competitions so far this season and not lost since the Ascot & Fielden District Charity Cup Final back in May. A goal from Josh O’Reilly ensured the match finished 2-2 after 90 minutes and would be decided on penalties.
The Os held their nerve best to win the shoot-out 4-2 and book a place in the Last 16 of the Berks & Bucks Cup competition for the first time since 2022. The match was described by a neutral spectator as “one of the best games at this level seen in a good number of years”.
Their reward is a trip to Abingdon Abbotts in the Fourth Round of the competition on Saturday 14th December (1.30pm). Abingdon have won at Frilsham & Yettendon and Newbury to reach the fourth round, and currently stand mid-table in the Oxfordshire Senior League Premier Division table.
Old Windsor had extra reason to celebrate on Saturday when the Reserves side eliminated East Berkshire League Division One rivals Hype Train to make progress in the Berks & Bucks F.A. David Grainge Junior Trophy.
The rearranged First Round tie ended in a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes before The Os won the penalties shoot-out 8-7 to set up a Second Round match at home to Caversham United this Saturday (1.30pm).
The First Round of the East Berkshire League Cup competition concluded last weekend and Caversham lost their perfect winning record at The Atrium Health Club following a 3-0 defeat to Slough Heating Laurencians Reserves.
A Craig Kelly brace and an Ellis Drummond strike ensured success for Slough Heating and a seventh successive win in all competitions for the team.
